“The name of the second river is Gihon: the same is it that which surrounds the whole land of Ethiopia.” (Genesis 2:13)
Today, the Gihon River is known as the Nile River. The Nile River is the longest river in the world. It is approximately 4,000 miles in length. Two rivers combine to form the Nile. They are the Blue Nile and the White Nile. The Nile River is a bit unusual in that it flows from south to north — not north to south. It gracefully flows through Egypt, the Nile Valley and the Nile Delta. The Nile Valley and Delta are two of the most fertile farm regions in the world. The Nile River moistens over 10 million acres of land in Africa, watering over 2.5 million acres in Sudan and over 7.5 million acres in Egypt.
The Blue Nile is the main contributary (water source) for the Nile River. It begins in the mountains of Ethiopia and literally surrounds Ethiopia’s land mass. No other river in the world fits the biblical description of “Gihon” but the Nile.
The White Nile begins in the Great Lakes of central Africa. It’s main feeder is Lake Victoria. Lake Victoria
is the second largest river in the world. Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania all come into contact with this lake. Water from Mount Kilimanjaro serves as a secondary feeder to the White Nile. Do you know what Mount Kilimanjaro is? Mount Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain in Africa. It stands approximately 19,340 feet above sea level.
“Out of the ground, El-o-him (God) formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air. El-o-him (God) brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. Whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was its name. Adam gave names to all the cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam, there was not found a helper fit for him.” (Genesis 2:19,20)
After God made Adam, he was given several tasks to do. One of Adam’s jobs was to name all of the animals. God did not allow Adam to be idol and without responsibility. God put him right to work!
Work is honorable. Let your work be characterized by neatness and exactness. With this, the Lord is well pleased. Pattern your life after the principle of “virtue”. Do you know what “virtue” is? Get some clues by reading about the “virtuous woman” in Proverb 31. If you’re still confused, look the word “virtue” up in the dictionary.
“Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies…she works willingly with her hands…
she brings her food from afar…she arises while it is yet night and prepares food for her household…she stretches out her hand to the poor and needy…she opens her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is kindness…she considers a field and buys it…she looks well to the ways of her household and eats not the bread of idleness…” (Proverbs 31:10-27)
Virtue is not a trait to be valued ONLY by girls. Boys! You should strive to be virtuous too! Those who follow God’s WAY are not lazy! The Bible says that Sodom was destroyed because of laziness.
“This was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom. Pride, fullness of bread, and abundance of IDLENESS was in her.” (Ezekiel 16:49).
My young friend. Beware of idleness! By God’s help, develop virtue instead.
